We've had a fun weekend at Life Church with the junior and senior high school students from Covenant Harvest Church school in Pittsburg, KS. They came in Friday in time for our school chapel, then had a Friday night worship meeting with our 6th-grade through college age group (and some old people like me).
Scott Squires, an elder from Covenant Harvest, and a graduate of our Bible college, came with the kids, and preached a powerful word to us this morning. More on that in a moment.
Paul Shipman led worship this morning, with myself on vocals and acoustic, Rebecca on vocals, Linda on vocals and keys, Jon on drums, D'Markus on bass, Bob on sax, and Lary on electric guitar. We do our arranging and rehearsing on Sunday mornings, starting at 7:45 for a 10:00 service. Today was one of those days that we needed all the time we had to pull it together, but Paul had chosen a great set, and did a good job of keeping on track. We got it all worked through and it went well in service. Here are the songs we did:
1. My Jesus I Love Thee - in D/E (W. Featherston/A Gordon, Public Domain, CCLI #27817). We started in D, with a fairly traditional flow, sang through the 1st and 2nd verses, and had Lary do an electric guitar solo verse, built up strong and modulated to E to come back to the 2nd verse again. Paul wanted to keep the lyrical flow going with that verse into the next song, which we picked up with a strong tom beat to kick into up-tempo.
2. For All You've Done - in E (Reuben Morgan, Hillsong, CCLI #4254689). I always love this song. It's such a good song for helping us to express genuine praise to the Lord for what He's done for us.
3. My Savior Lives - in B (J. Egan/G. Packiam, Vertical Worship Songs, CCLI #4882965). When we ended this one, we went to the bridge and slowed it down, worshiped freely with it for a moment, before crossing over very naturally to...
4. Nothing But The Blood - in B (Matt Redman, ThankYou Music, CCLI #4329411).
Scott preached a message entitled, "Hail, Favored One." He talked about how a wordly Christian culture sometimes tries to boil the favor of God down to a very self-centered idea, that God's favor brings us basically whatever we want. But the truth is that the favor of God is for the purpose of accomplishing His will. Scott did a masterful job of painting this picture, starting with a list of things that happened throughout the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, after the angel told her she had the favor of God - not all so good. In reality, the favor of God brings us into conflicts that are directly connected to advancing the Kingdom of God, and then gives us the power to uphold us through the conflict for the sake of seeing the will of God done.
We had an altar of consecrating ourselves to the favor of God, where we sang...
5. At The Cross - in E (R. Morgan/D. Zschech, Hillsong, CCLI #4591816), and...
6. Surrender - in G (Marc James, Vineyard UK, CCLI #3033179).
