We were missing several people at Life Church this week, due to having 8 or 10 people on a trip to the Philippines, a couple out to see our friends at Christian Life Fellowship in Raliegh, N.C., oh, and did I mention it's deer hunting season? That took a few more to the woods. Nonetheless, we had a great morning together in the Lord. I thought there was a real family atmosphere, and heard others mention this as well.
Ruth Pingel led worship this week, and we tried something a little different. Rather than having a full band, Ruth led from the keyboard, with Jon Shipman and myself playing acoustic guitars and singing with her. It was a lot of fun! I thought we might have a little trouble staying together rythmically without drums and bass, but actually, it was not bad at all.
Ruth did a great job of choosing songs, although we only wound up doing three of them. I think we cut a little shorter than normal to make time for more announcements than usual, and we also we took time to wish Larry Smoyer a happy 60th birthday. Larry's loved us and served us all for more than 20 years. He's such a wonderful man of God, it was really good to take a few moments and honor him today.
Anyway, here are the songs we did this morning:
1. Enough - in E (Chris Tomlin/Louie Giglio, EMI Christian Music, CCLI #3599479)
2. Blessed Be Your Name - in A (Matt & Beth Redman, ThankYou Music, CCLI #3798438)
Ruth stayed in the background on the keys on these two, and let Jon and I carry them on the guitars. People responded well, and as far as the sparse instrumentation, it really didn't seem as different or awkward as I thought it might be.
3. Nothing But The Blood - in A (Matt Redman, ThankYou Music, CCLI #4329411)
Other Songs we practiced, but didn't do this morning:
What Joy is Found (Jeremy Riddle, Mercy/Vineyard, CCLI #4865920) I love this song!
It Is You (Pete Sanchez, Integrity, CCLI #16244)
My Jesus I Love Thee (W.R. Featherston/A.J. Gordon, Public Domain, arrngmnt CCLI #27817)
None But Jesus (Brooke Fraser, Hillong, CCLI #4726186)
Roger Moore led the meeting today, with Trey Allemang and David Bost, and the three of them took care of the offering, announcements, and Larry's 'happy birthday' at this point. Then they introduced this morning's speaker, who I didn't really care for, so I didn't pay much attention to what he said...oh, wait, it was me. Ha!
I preached about the Incorruptible Seed of the Word of God. We talked about the parable of the sower, and I felt God was emphasizing the fact that the seed will produce - the only thing that keeps it from producing is not getting into the soil, not getting into good soil. We read mostly out of Matt. 13 and I Peter 1:13-25. Sometimes we forget that the supernatural power of God is at work in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure, and He is well able - through what He's already implanted in us - to cause our lives to be lived as He designed them to be.
We didn't really have an altar call per se, and Ruth and Jon played behind prayers that closed out the meeting. Hope you had a great day at your place. Feel free to leave a comment, and check out what happened in worship all over the place at Fred McKinnon's worship blog carnival. God bless!
