After spending the last part of the week in Pittsburg, KS, at a leadership conference, it was great to be home today (I'll be posting an update on the "Travelogue" page soon). Several of our leaders and others from our congregation were still in Pittsburg today, but the rest of us here had a great morning with each other in the presence of God.
Paul Shipman led us in worship this morning. I played acoustic, with Jon on drums, Bethany on keys, Buddy on bass, Bob on sax, Lary on electric, with backing vocalists Kathy, Jamie, Amy, and myself. Paul had and 8- or 9-song list for us to work with, to give us some options. We would up doing these 4 in the meeting:
1. Everything Glorious (David Crowder, sixsteps Music, CCLI# 4674173).
I don't believe we'd done this one before with the congregation, although we had a group play it on the town square at a Truman University student welcome thing a couple of weeks ago. It was a little tricky to introduce, as our overhead projector wasn't working, so Paul had to feed people the words a line ahead of singing them. We were missing an overhead operator all through rehearsal, but someone had sat in as we started the meeting, and it seemed to be working fine. Things happen. I had Paul's back, though - as we worked our way through this song (which went fine) I was making a quick list in my head of songs I knew the musicians could do without music, and the congregation could do without words - but the projector started working again, right at the end of this song. I was glad!
2. Happy Day (Ben Cantelon, Tim Hughes, ThankYou Music, CCLI# 4847027).
This is the third Sunday in a row we've done this one, which we normally wouldn't do, but it's just bringing life to us right now. Clay Talton and Michelle Allemang came and exhorted us during this one, and we shouted, sang, danced, and praised our brains out, with a genuine sense of rejoicing for the "happy day" of our salvation - not just that first day, but the 'day' of salvation He bought for us and has brought us into the life of.
3. Burn In Me (Jonathan and Jamie Fulk, Life Church of Kirksville).
This is a new song, just written this week by our own Jon and Jamie Fulk. Jamie (with Paul, who happens to be her dad) did a great job of teaching us this song, and leading us into the heart cry it provokes. Here are some of the words:
Verse: "As deep calls to deep, so your love calls to me. And it burns me forever, and it marks me with your seal..."
Chorus: "And I fall down on my knees, and Your fire burns through me. And the earth begins to quake, here in this holy place..."
Bridge: "Let Your fire burn right through me, let Your holy flame consume me..." "King of glory take Your place, here among us with hands we raise".
Beautiful song, and it really brought us into a deep place of reverence and worship.
Roger Moore, with David Bost and Clay Talton, did a great job of leading the meeting this morning. Jerry Burbee preached a great message - "What Is The Cross?" He really challenged us to encounter the cross of Christ in our lives again, yielding to the power of God released by the one unselfish act of Christ, then multiplied to the rest of the earth through unselfish lives we are to live for His glory by the power of the cross working in us.
4. The Deep of Your Grace (Mia Fieldes, Hillsong, CCLI# 4795100).
We finished at the altar with this one.
If you were there this morning at Life Church, what are some thoughts you came away with? Leave a comment and let us know.
If you're from elsewhere, hope you had a great day in the Lord, and feel free to leave a comment as well. Read about what happened in other places today, at Fred McKinnon's worship blog carnival.
